Past Directors

Walter C. Welke (1929 – 1956)

  • Graduate of University of Michigan
  • Adopted “high-step” traditional style of marching still used today
  • Early innovator in the integration of on-field drill and musical performance
  • Bands consisted entirely of University students
  • Begun tradition of saluting visiting teams by spelling out their name on the field and performing their fight song
Bill Cole (1957 – 1969)

  • Graduate of University of Illinois
  • Oversaw the adaptation of Bill Moffitt’s Soundpower squad system as the basis planning and marching system used by the Husky Band to this day.
  • Begun the traditional “bowing the letters” in HUSKIES formation on the field
  • Not only maintained the traditional style of the band but had an enormous impact on the band’s level of musicianship
Bill Bissell (1970 – 1993)

  • Graduate of Willamette College and University of Illinois
  • His approach to his entertaining halftime productions was decidedly “vaudevillian.”
  • Created “The Wave” along with former Yell King Rob Weller in Husky Stadium for Homecoming 1981
  • Developed the Band’s signature ‘flag pole’ formation and flag raising ceremony, which has been performed at the conclusion of every home pre-game show ever since. It was once noted as “the most spectacular presentation of colors in the nation.”
