Husky Band Leadership

Senior Staff – The Senior Staff team comprises of full-time and part-time employees, as well as volunteers. The Director, field assistants, and media assistants are all considered members of the Senior Staff team.

Graduate Assistant – The Graduate Assistants work closely with all staff members, particularly the Director, to ensure the effective running of all band rehearsals and performances. Primary duties include on-field conducting and teaching of drill, writing and proofing shows, and fulfilling additional administrative duties as assigned by the Director. Graduate assistantship usually consists of a three year tenure.

Undergraduate Assistant – The UA is a vital link between the Senior Staff and the Student Staff. They are responsible for coordinating the entire undergraduate staff. A primary responsibility is the coordinating of show proofing and disbursement of drill charts. Additional responsibilities may also include field conducting during rehearsals or performances.

Staff Assistant – There are generally two Staff Assistants who work closely with all staff members, particularly the UA, to help ensure that all staff work assignments are completed in a timely fashion. Primary duties include setting up the field prior to rehearsals and game days.

Music Librarian – The Music Librarian is primarily responsible for the copying, disbursement, collection, and cataloguing of all music used in the various athletic bands.

Uniform Manager – The primary responsibility of the Uniform Manager is to assign uniforms to all members of the band prior to the start of the season, and do repairs during the season.

Attendance Officer – The Attendance Officer is in charge of taking attendance prior to rehearsals and performances, as well as subsequent record-keeping. These attendance records are a critical component of the Husky Band grading policy.

Drum Major – The Drum Majors are the highest ranking marching members of the band, and function as “field commanders” of the band during rehearsals and performances. They work closely with the Director in leading rehearsals and performances. The Drum Majors assume responsibility for teaching marching fundamentals, and all other basics necessary for quality rehearsals and performances. In addition, the Drum Majors must possess the ability to put a high degree of “showmanship” into their performances, while at the same time commanding the respect of the entire organization. Students interested in trying out for the position of Drum Major must have completed at least one season in the Husky Band as a marching member, and audition for the positions regardless of prior status as Husky Band Drum Major. A member can hold the position of Drum Major for a maximum of three years.

Section Leader – Section Leaders are responsible for a particular instrumental section of the band. This responsibility includes the training of the section in the content and execution of the marching fundamentals, regular rehearsal of the performance music, maintenance of the proper rehearsal discipline, instruction in the basic rules and regulations as contained in the band handbook, and the maintenance of high standards of performance, and spirit within the section. Candidates must have been a marching member of the Husky Band for at least one season, and are selected by an audition and interview process.
